What is white noise?
White noise holds equal energy at every frequency. Plotted across the spectrum it is a flat line, which is what gives it that even, bright hiss with no particular pitch standing out. It is the reference point the other noise colors are defined against: pink, brown, green and grey are all white noise with a different slope applied.
Because its energy is spread evenly rather than pooled in the bass, white noise puts real power up in the 1 kHz to 4 kHz range where speech lives. That is the single most useful fact about it. If the thing keeping you awake is a conversation through a wall, a television next door or traffic, white noise covers it more completely than any other color.

Why white noise helps sleep and focus
Masking works by raising a room's noise floor so that sudden events stop arriving as sharp contrast against near silence. White noise is the most complete masker available because it has no gaps: whatever frequency the intruding sound occupies, there is white noise energy already sitting there.
The trade is fatigue. That same flat response puts a lot of energy where human hearing is most sensitive, so white noise is the color most likely to feel harsh over a long night. It is excellent for a loud room and for falling asleep quickly. If you wake up feeling like you have been listening to something, pink or grey will usually sit easier for the same masking job.
How loud should you set it?
White noise is the easiest color to set too loud, because the hiss partly masks its own volume: it does not feel as loud as it measures. Set it at night with the real disturbance present, raise it only until that disturbance stops pulling your attention, then come back down until masking just begins to fail and settle a little above that.

How this generator actually works
White noise is the easiest color to fake, and most sites offering it are handing you a short audio file set to repeat. This one generates its audio in your browser instead, using a port of the generator that runs inside the Veil app.
The source is raw uniform random noise, then two low-pass stages at 2.5 kHz and 8 kHz. That shaping matters: textbook white noise is perfectly flat, and left unshaped its top end is the part most people describe as piercing. Rolling it gently keeps the masking power while taking the edge off.
White is the one color here that needs no loop sealing. It carries no generator state from one sample to the next, so a single 30 second buffer repeats with nothing to hear at the boundary.
