Generated live.
Shaped to your ear.

Most brown noise apps play a recording and loop it. Veil's brown noise is a random walk computed on your phone while you listen, so what you hear tonight has never played before and will not come around again.

No loop, ever
The generator runs continuously. There is no audio file, no seam and no restart to pull you back awake at three in the morning.
Four tuning controls
Character sets how deep the rumble sits. Brightness trims or opens the top end. Texture changes its grain and Intensity sets how hard it pushes. All four are included with brown noise, free.
Precision volume
A fine-grained volume control lets you find the lowest level that covers your room, which is easier on your ears across a whole night than a slider with ten coarse steps.
Plays with the screen off
Lock your phone and the sound keeps going, with lock-screen controls on iPhone and Android.
A sleep timer that fades out
Set a timer and the sound fades out slowly rather than cutting off.
Works offline, no account
Nothing needs an internet connection, and there is no account or sign-up.

What brown noise can and cannot do.

Brown noise works by masking. A quiet bedroom is not a calm one: it has a low noise floor, so every door, car and shifting partner arrives as a sharp contrast against near silence, and those contrasts are what wake you. Steady low-frequency sound raises the floor so they stop standing out. That mechanism is better established than any claim about one color beating another. Brown noise is not proven to improve sleep for everyone, research on this particular color is thin, and it is not a treatment for ADHD or anything else. What it can do is cover a noisy room at a volume low enough to leave running all night. Try it at the lowest level that covers whatever bothers you, and if it has not helped after a few nights, try pink noise or a fan sound instead.

Try Veil's brown noise in your browser.

The web player runs the same generator as the app, free and with no signup. If it suits you, the app adds playback through a locked screen, the sleep timer and the tuning controls that made the two presets below.

Before you download.

Is brown noise free in Veil?
Yes. White, pink and brown noise and the Slow Fan are free, along with their tuning controls. Premium adds the other sounds, mixing and saved mixes.
Does Veil's brown noise loop?
No. The app synthesizes brown noise as it plays, from a random walk rather than a recording. There is no audio file and no loop boundary, which is the reason the sound never pulls you back awake with a restart.
Does it keep playing with the screen locked?
Yes, on both iPhone and Android. Lock-screen controls work, and the sleep timer fades the sound out over a chosen interval rather than cutting it off. If audio ever stops overnight on Android, this guide covers the battery settings behind it.
How do I make brown noise deeper or softer?
Open brown noise and tap its tune button. Character moves the rumble lower or higher, Brightness trims or opens the top end, Texture changes the grain and Intensity sets how hard it pushes. You can hear two of those settings first as the deep and soft browser presets.
Is Veil available on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Veil is on the App Store and Google Play. It needs no account, no setup and no internet connection to play, so it works on a plane or anywhere without signal.
