Real fan, electronic noise or recording?

The sound source matters more than whether the product is hardware or software. Dohm and SNOOZ make sound with moving air. LectroFan generates sound electronically. Apps vary: some play recorded tracks, while Veil generates its sounds on the device.

A real fan has a physical texture you may prefer. Electronic generation can offer a wider choice of noise colors without a motor. Recorded rain or ocean sounds can work well too, especially when a player blends or varies its layers. Listen for a pattern that distracts you; a recording is not automatically bad, and a physical machine is not automatically free of repetition.

If white noise feels too bright, compare white, pink and brown noise before choosing the device. If you already like a fan, use the fan sound guide to narrow down its character.

Dohm Classic: physical simplicity and a real fan

The Yogasleep Dohm Classic uses an internal fan, two speed settings and an adjustable housing to change its tone. There is no track to stream and no phone to pair. It suits someone who wants one familiar fan sound and an uncomplicated bedside control.

The limitation is variety: it does not switch between brown noise, rain and a sound mix. It is also a corded device. Yogasleep specifies the linked US model for use in the United States and Canada, an important detail if you plan to take it abroad.

LectroFan EVO: electronic variety without a phone

The LectroFan EVO is the useful middle ground for someone who wants different sounds but prefers dedicated hardware. Its manufacturer lists ten fan sounds, ten white, pink and brown noise variations, and two ocean sounds. The noise is generated electronically, so a real fan motor is not required.

You choose a preset and adjust volume using the device. That is simpler than a phone interface, but different from reshaping the frequency character of an individual sound. Check the exact model when shopping: the EVO, Classic and portable Micro models are not interchangeable specifications.

SNOOZ Original: a real fan with more control

SNOOZ Original combines a physical fan with adjustable tone and volume. It is an option for someone who likes moving-air sound but wants app features such as scheduling as well as controls on the machine.

It remains a fan-based product, rather than a collection of separate brown-noise, rain and mechanical sounds. Its smart controls also make it a different purchase from the very simple Dohm. See the SNOOZ Original specifications for the current controls and power requirements.

Hatch Restore 3: sound plus a sunrise alarm

Hatch Restore 3 belongs in this comparison because some people want to replace more than a sound machine. It combines sleep audio with lighting and a sunrise alarm. The app and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi are part of setup; its physical controls are designed for everyday bedside use.

Choose it for that broader routine, not just because you need steady fan noise. Distinguish the device's included sounds and alarm features from the additional content in Hatch's optional subscription. Review the trial and renewal terms during setup. Veil has a bedside clock and bedtime reminders, but it does not provide a sunrise light or wake-up alarm.

Veil: an adjustable sound machine on your phone

Veil is built for the narrower job of playing and shaping sleep sounds. White, pink and brown noise and Slow Fan are free, including their tuning controls, precision volume and sleep timer. Sounds are generated on your phone, so they do not need streaming or downloaded audio files. No ads or account are required.

Premium adds the full sound library, mixing up to three sounds and saved mixes. You can subscribe or choose a lifetime purchase. The useful difference is control: soften a noise that feels harsh, change a fan's character, or save a combination you want to hear again.

The compromise is the phone itself. Its speaker may not give you the low-end sound you want, and calls or other audio can interrupt playback. If you want the phone completely out of the bedroom, a dedicated machine is the more direct solution.

Can a phone speaker replace a sound machine?

Sometimes, but the app is only half of the system. A small phone speaker and a larger bedside speaker can make the same brown noise sound quite different. Tone controls change the signal; they cannot create bass that the speaker cannot reproduce.

Try the speaker you already own before buying another one. A phone speaker may be enough for a nearby listening position. An external speaker offers another option, but it adds its own power, connection and auto-sleep behavior. A Bluetooth speaker that switches off overnight can defeat an otherwise reliable app.

No option soundproofs a room. Persistent thumps, vibration or loud snoring may remain audible. Choose a comfortable sound and level rather than assuming the loudest device is the best one.

For hotels and travel, check power before sound count

An offline app has an obvious packing advantage: the phone is already coming with you. Test it with the screen locked and the connection off before you leave. If you use a separate speaker, test that exact combination too.

A portable machine is worth considering when you want an independent battery and physical buttons. The LectroFan Micro2+, for example, has a rechargeable battery, eleven built-in sounds and an optional Bluetooth speaker mode. Its built-in sounds do not need a phone. Small does not always mean battery-powered, and USB-powered does not mean rechargeable. Check the exact model's battery, charger and voltage requirements. A plug adapter alone does not change voltage compatibility.

You do not have to make one choice forever. A dedicated machine at home and an app while traveling is a practical combination. You keep the bedside routine you like without packing the same hardware for every trip.

Compare the full cost, including a speaker or subscription

A basic sound machine is usually a one-time hardware purchase. A connected device can add an optional content subscription. Apps can be free, subscription-based or available as a lifetime unlock. Look at what you can keep using without another payment, not just the trial.

Veil's four free sounds make it possible to test the software route before spending anything. If you already own a suitable speaker, that changes the comparison. A simple way to decide tonight

1. Pick a sound, not a product. Compare a fan with pink or brown noise at a similar comfortable level.
2. Use the output you would use in bed. Your laptop speakers are not a test of your phone speaker or a dedicated machine.
3. Try the overnight setup. Check screen lock, power, alarms and any speaker auto-sleep. Review notification settings while preserving calls or alerts you need.
4. Choose the missing capability. Buy hardware for physical independence, a real fan or a sunrise light. Choose software for adjustable sounds and portability.

Questions about sound machines and apps

Is a white noise machine better than an app?

A machine is better for independence from your phone and physical controls. An app is better for trying sounds and carrying your settings without another device. Neither is universally better at masking noise: the sound, output speaker, placement and room all matter.

Is Dohm or LectroFan better for brown noise?

LectroFan EVO explicitly offers brown-noise variations. Dohm Classic makes real fan sound with adjustable tone; it does not have a labeled brown-noise mode. If you want more control over brown noise itself, compare the brown-noise apps as well.

Does a sound machine need Wi-Fi?

Basic machines such as Dohm Classic and LectroFan EVO do not. Connected devices have different requirements, so check setup and offline operation separately. Veil's sound generation works offline after installation; purchases and store downloads need a connection.

Can I use an app instead of Hatch?

For sleep sound, an app can be an alternative. For a physical sunrise light and integrated wake-up alarm, Veil is not a replacement. Decide whether you want only the audio or the whole bedside routine.

Do all white noise apps loop recordings?

No. Some use recordings, others generate sound, and some vary multiple layers. Veil synthesizes audio on-device with playback designed to avoid a noticeable restart. Hardware varies too: Dohm and SNOOZ use fans, while LectroFan generates sound electronically.
